Thursday, November 29, 2007 23 bouts in Monico Cup on December 2 By Henry C. Villalva
BACOLOD boxing fans who make it a habit of trooping to the SM City north terminal every Sunday afternoon will be treated to 23 bouts starting at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, when the 1st Monico Cup Golden Gloves Inter-Barangay amateur Boxing Tournament resumes.
After making it to the win column last Sunday when Johnrey Melligen defeated Vincent Bolonia of erstwhile co-leader Barangay Estefania in the 42-kilogram category, Barangay Pahanocoy further hopes to catch up with solo leader Barangay Sum-ag this Sunday by fielding eight more boxers in the third play date of the event.
The bouts are being staged in cooperation with the Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) headed by Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Commissioner and former Bacolod councilor Juan Ramon Guanzon and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
Pahanocoy, mentored by Gerardo Melligen, will pin its hopes on Rocky Edaño (26 kilograms) against Sum-ag's Rofel Nobleza; Ariel Latoza (32 kgs) against Sami Gayo of Mandalagan; Eufre Rodrigo (34 kgs) against Ruben Aldilera of Barangay 13; Ruben Sibugan (36 kgs) against Robert Descalso of Mandalagan; Willie Frayco (42 kgs) against Carlo Almedo of Barangay 21; Ronel Parcan (42 kgs) against Jeffrey Valle of Barangay 35; and Cliffmark Melligen (45 kgs) against Jacob Dalaguit of Sum-ag.
Barangay Sum-ag, which has already notched six victories in the last two playing dates of the tournament participated only by amateur boxers who are Bacolod residents, is bent on retaining its lead when it fields seven more boxers in this Sunday's card.
