Friday, February 29, 2008 Athlete's omission from Negros roster questioned By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.
LOCOTON Elementary School Principal Regin Fat on Thursday afternoon asked acting Governor Isidro Zayco with regards to the removal of an athlete's name from the roster of athletic delegation who will be competing in the forthcoming Western Visayas Regional Meet in Antique.
According to Fat, DepEd's decision of deleting the name of 12-year-old Christian Mark del Rosario from the list of athletics players was questionable even though he was stricken with 'chicken pox.'
"Yes, my player had 'chicken pox' a few weeks ago but he was already treated. It is unfair that he was removed from the roster without conducting proper medical check-up on his status," Fat said.
"The competition will still be on March 13 (by that time), the kid is ready to compete. Besides, he is the holder of the 400m and 1,500m records of the last Provincial Meet," Frat added.
The child suffered from 'chicken pox' last February 10 thus he was no longer allowed to join the team's training at Panaad tracks. "But, Rosario continued his training in our school in Kabankalan to maintain routine," Fat added.
Meanwhile, surgeon and medical practitioner Dr. Vicente Ituriaga III said that the incubation period of this virus is 14 to 21 days after exposure.
A physician also said that an athlete, who experienced 'chicken pox', is no longer likely to spread the 'chicken pox' virus after a month has lapsed and by then is ready to compete.
Negros Occidental Athletics team head coach Rio Dagudom and DepEd PESS supervisor Felipe Dumancas could not be reached for reaction as of presstime.
