WVRAA Meet reels off today

HUNDREDS of athletes and officials from different provinces in Western Visayas are expected to pack the Binirayan Sports Complex in San Jose, Antique as the 2008 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Meet opens Thursday.

This annual meet, which will run from March 13-17 will serve as the regional qualifying for the forthcoming Palarong Pambansa in Puerto Princesa, Palawan next month.

Among the Negrense standouts expected to banner the Negros campaign for titles are shuttlers 13-year-old Nikki Therese Servando and Christian Crisostomo of Trinity Christian School, St. Scholastica Academy's Maegan Sabino, and Ernesto Layao, Merry Joy Fernandez and Maritschelle Legada of Cadiz City.

Tanker Kiefer Alexander Piccio leads the secondary boys swim team bid alongside Karlo del Carmen, Gerald Gelanga and Nico Kuan, among others while Tia Lacson will banner the girls division.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education-Negros Occidental had assured its athletes' safety as they have already prepared their insurances as part of its standard operating procedure in assuring the delegation's protection.

Aside from the insurance, DepEd also assured that its delegation's food is well-monitored to prevent food-related incidents. They don't want the Antique food poisoning, during the early preparation period, to also happen to team-Negros.

Earlier, thirty-four elementary and secondary school athletes preparing for the regional sports brawl were hospitalized after suffering from symptoms of food poisoning in San Jose, Antique. (JSG)
