FORMER back-to-back champion Barangay Estefania led winners last Tuesday in the ongoing 2008 Monico Cup 19-Under Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament at the Alijis-Regent Pearl Court escaping over hard-fighting Barangay Handumanan, 80-72.
Leading Estefania's scorers were Velasquez with 26 points while Ruego and Herpertor finished with 13 and 11, respectively.
Handumanan got 15 points from Estoqua and 12 from Tertocion in their losing effort.
Also posting wins in this grassroots sports outreach program being staged by the congressional district office of Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella with the tournament being run by tournament chairman Monico "Nicky" Puentevella, Jr. were Barangay Singcang Airport over last season's 26-Under titlist Barangay 10, 70-52, and Bar angay 8 prevailing over Barangay 30, 62-53 and Cabug escaping over Barangay 14, 56-53.
Leading Singcang-Airport's scores were Valle 1, Poblacion 15 and Diamante 8 while Dela Gente topscored with 25 for Barangay 10 and Basto chipped in with 10 points.
Meanwhile, Barangay 14, mentored by Tito Jabonales got 15 points from Serran and 12 from Cabalo while Cabug with 21 and Dela Cruz with 17.
In other previous games last April 19 at Punta Taytay, it was Barangay 28 over Mansilingan, 75-66; Barangay 14 over Handumanan, 70-64, Pahanocoy over Barangay 41, 86-66 and Taculing over Barangay 12, 111-93.
Elsewhere last April 20 at the Barangay 35 court, it was Barangay 19 over Barangay 20, 79-46, Tangub over Banago, 74-40, Estefania over Alijis, 90-83 and reigning 19-Under titlist Bata over Alijis, 90-83.
The Monico Cup caging is being held in tandem with the Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Amateur Boxing Tournament dubbed as Monico Golden Gloves which was successfully launched last year in cooperation with the Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) headed by Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Commissioner Juan Ramon "Monju" Guanzon.
