Marwin Pawnshop nips CSAB-JPV in NBA tourney

MARWIN Pawnshop nipped Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod/JPV, 97-96, last Sunday while University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos/Cegasco and West Negros University posted wins in the ongoing 2008 Negros Basketball Association (NBA) Mayor's Cup summer basketball tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Serving notice that this year's series may not necessarily be a monopoly of varsity squads, Marwin Pawnshop leaned on the efforts of ex-varsitarians Sammy Dave Belangel and Tommy Andren who combined for 38 points for the win.

Jun Gelasan led JPV's losing effort with 18 while former PBA pro Leo Bat-og tallied 16 and former CSAB Eagles Joemel Garrido and Johnson Salazar chipped in with 14 apiece.

Reigning Nopsscea champion West Negros University drubbed Coverdale Beach Resort and Pension House, 100-76, getting another game-high 32-point performance from the prolific Ely Olarte, 18 from Alfie Villariza, 15 from Vengie Vergara and 11 from slotman Vergilio Dapar.

Joe Strike posted a team-high 20 points for Coverdale and got scoring support from Jeproks Buñol with 10 while Rodel Canino and Edward Combong combined for another 17 points.

Meanwhile, six University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams tallied double-digit scores to lead Cegasco to an 80-72 victory over NOBC/Tough Truck/BUS Group in last Sunday's third match-up.

Last Saturday's results showed the WNU Mustangs posting a 97-72 win over Marwin Pawnshop getting a game-high 25 points from Villariza, 12 from Olarte, 11 from Jeff Jacinto and 10 apiece from Briton Javelona and Robert Lauron. Andren led Marwin Pawnshop with 19.

Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod/JPV dealt Province of Negros Occidental its first loss in the series, 79-74, with 17 points from Gelasan, 16 from Bat-og, 11 from Santillan, 13 from Demonteverde and 10 from Tuyo.

Joemarie Bayhon, Rex Bayer, and Jessiemer Gabihan led the Province with 16, 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Coverdale dumped University of St. La Salle, 103-85, getting 27 from Rebadonia, 24 from Buñol and 20 from Strike.

The Stingers were led by Roselo Miraflores with 15, 13 apiece from Mark Celestial and Elven Diaz while Samuel Caro, Arnulfo Corriente and Torre combined for 25 points in their losing effort.

Eight teams are seeing action in this year's NBA cagefest dubbed as the Mayor's Cup tournament. (Henry C. Villalva)
