Monday, May 12, 2008 Town mulls moscuvado mill for organic sugarcane farming
MOISES Padilla Mayor Francisco Nazareno said they are considering the putting up of a moscuvado mill in their town on their plan to venture into organic sugarcane farming soon.
"It's a given fact right now that moscuvado sugar is in demand abroad. We, therefore, plan to put a mill for this purpose but we want first to engage in organic sugarcane farming," he said.
He said he is negotiating with the Land Bank of the Philippines on this proposal.
As to how much the proposed mill would cost, Nazareno said: "I don't know yet but we will have a feasibility study on this as soon as possible."
Known as the livestock capital of Negros, Moises Padilla is also fast becoming the center of organic farming in the province.
At present, it has a 56-hectare land area allotted to organic rice farming. Nazareno said: "It's doing well with a lot of demand even though our organic rice sells at P45 per kilo."
"Aside from organic rice and sugarcane, we already have plans to venture into organic vegetables and fruits farming," the mayor added.
Plan to produce organic fertilizer in Moises Padilla is also in the offing, Nazareno added.(Erwin Ambo Delilan)
