Tuesday, May 27, 2008 WNU Mustangs master CSAB-JPV anew By Henry C. Villalva
NEWLY crowned Negros Basketball Association (NBA) Mayor's Cup champion West Negros University Mustangs once again highlighted their mastery of the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod/JPV Eagles team with a one-sided 93-52 dumping last Sunday at the Barangay Handumanan covered court.
Point guard Jeff Jacinto topscored for the Dennis Tumayan-mentored Mustangs with a game-high 18 points, while NBA Mayor's Cup MVP Ely Olarte chipped in with 16 and slotman Vergilio Dapar with 13 for the blowout victory.
Only Rommel Tuyo managed to finish in double figures with 14 for the handicapped Eagles, who played minus their valuable reinforcements in ex-pro Leo Bat-og, diminutive Peewee Demonteverde, three-point specialist Johnson Salazar, Mamerto Santillan and Edcil Rey Quizan.
Jun Gelasan added six points in their losing effort.
The WNU-CSAB/JPV game was made possible through an invitation by Handumanan barangay captain Ricardo Danoy, coursed through NBA president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon in connection with the closing rites of the barangay's just-concluded basketball tournament for 22-above and 21-under cagers involving some 40 teams.
The Mustangs are the reigning Nopsscea (Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural & Educational Association) champions as well as former UniGames (National University Games) and National Students Basketball Championships (inter-collegiate) titlists.
The team topped the recent NBA summer tournament, beating the Eagles, 69-59, after winning all their elimination round assignments in the eight-team series NBA centerpiece event.
Sunday's exhibition game at Handumanan was witnessed by Bascon and NBA tournament commissioner Bobby Tee.
