Thursday, July 03, 2008 List-up of teams for NBA Governor's Cup ongoing
TEAMS wanting to see action in the forthcoming Negros Basketball Association (NBA) Governor Isidro Zayco Invitational Basketball Cup '08 can now register with the NBA at Bascon Hotel or through tournament commissioner Bobby Tee, said NBA president Oscar ‘Dodong' Bascon.
The Governor's Cup, which kicks off on August 2 at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School, is envisioned by organizers as the NBA's contribution to the province's ongoing grassroots sports development program.
"Through this tournament, we hope to give opportunities to teams from outside Bacolod to join and thus open the possibility of being able to discover fresh talents from the grassroots," Bascon told Sun.Star Bacolod Wednesday.
Among the teams expected to confirm their participation in the forthcoming competition are Ticel and Toyota from Iloilo City, Pamplona Bulls, Province of Negros Occidental, Silay City Selection, Hinigaran, Escalante City as well as Bacolod-based school teams led by reigning NOPSSCEA champion West Negros University Mustangs.
The Mustangs topped the NBA's Mayor's Cup series last May after defeating a reinforced Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod/JPV squad, 69-59, in the championship match.
"We expect the Bacolod-based school teams not to miss this tournament as this can very well serve as a tune-up series in preparation for this year's NOPSSCEA competition," Bascon added.
The other school squads that saw action in the last NBA Mayor's Cup tournament were the University of St. La Salle Stingers and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos/CEGASCO Rams.
Teams interested to see action in the NBA Governor's Cup '08 may inquire at the NBA office at Bascon Hotel through telephone numbers 435-4072 and 433-13-93 through Nelia Naluis. (HCV)
