Friday, July 11, 2008 Melligen stars in Saturday's 'Fists on Fire' By Henry C. Villalva
NEGRENSE boxing fans are expected to troop to the West Negros University Gym this Saturday, July 12, starting 6 p.m. to watch the 'Fists on Fire' pro boxing promotion starring Barangay Pahanocoy, Bacolod City native and former Negros Amateur Boxing Association (Naba) prodigy Mark Jason Melligen in the main bout.
Melligen, a 2005 Southeast Asian Games silver medallist currently belonging to the famous ALA boxing stable of Cebu City-based Negrense international boxing promoter Antonio 'Bidoy' Aldeguer, is slated to tangle against challenger Cris Alag of Cagayan de Oro City in a title defense of his RP super lightweight championship crown.
'Fists on fire' is being supported by Naba, headed by former Bacolod City councilor and now Games and Amusement Board (GAB) commissioner Juan Ramon 'Monju' Guanzon, who has urged the Negrense boxing community to give all-out support to the pro boxing promotion.
Saturday's card also features several Bacolod-based aspiring pro pugs who will all battle opponents from other parts of the country in the undercard.
Tickets for Saturday's promotion are priced at P60, P100 and P150 and are available at the Bascon Hotel front desk and other Bacolod outlets on a first come, first serve basis.
Several amateur bouts are also lined up featuring standouts from Naba who booked wins during the recent Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap)-Smart National Open, Youth and Women's Amateur Boxing Championships held in Iloilo City, as well as during the 1st Monico Golden Gloves Inter-Barangay boxing tournament last December.
