Three more victories and Alvin will become outright champion in the Sharp Cup quadrangular meet of the Basketball Unified Sports Group at Lopue's South Square gym.
Reynaldo Valencia scored 26 points, Armando Soberano added 16 and Randy Cawaling 12 for the unbeaten team which led 33-28 in the first half. Coach Bing Soyao's charges got 27 from Zaldy Navarra and 12 from Moises Padilla as the rest threw bricks trying to outdo each other.
Navarra hit 11 in the third quarter and Team 'S' led 48-47 as it outscored Alvin 20-14. But the undefeated maintained their composure and played smart basketball to thwart their closest rivals who resorted to desperate 3-pointers when there is no need for it.
In the other match, Axial Engineering Works blasted Sucden, 94-83, as Edgar Espares waxed hot with 26 to lead five others in double figure scores. Melvin Baclay contributed 19 for his first game in six and Edwin Gonzaga 12. Rene Antones, Raymundo Sapa and Abet Jarder chipped in 10 apiece for the rout.
Winless Sucden, which got 16 from Vic Dueñas and 15 each Bert Pabon and Nene Lapore trailed 23-13 and 43-33 at half and never came close the entire game.
Arman Pabon added 13 but his scoring effort and power under the boards were useless as Antones cut loose for 10 points in the last quarter.
Games on Friday for the start of the third round pit Team 'S' and Sucden will be at 6:30 p.m. Alvin will go against Axial at 8 p.m. (Henry G. Doble)
