Chessfest list-up deadline set August 8

THERE will definitely be no extension to the August 8 6 p.m. deadline for the registration of participants to the 1st Game Royale Aficionados Inter-Member Individual Open Chess Tournament, which is slated to open on August 10, 2 p.m., at the Game Royale Aficionados of Negros Inc. Clubhouse at the lobby of Top's Plaza bowling Lanes, 10th/Hilado Sts., Capitol Shopping Center in Bacolod City.

"The event is really meant to discover fresh talents and to give local chess a much-needed boost considering the obvious absence of tournaments in this part of the country," said tournament director Dodz Felisilda.

The non-extension to the registration deadline aims to give enough time for tournament officials to arrange and procure all needed tournament materials, assign officiating staff and finalize the first round pairings, he added.

The tournament runs from August 10 to 31, 2 to 6 p.m., with participating woodpushers required to pay a registration fee of P100 plus club membership fee of P100.

The competition is open to all chess players, male or female, with no age limit but with participants required to know how to record chess games either in Descriptive/English Notation (P-K4- P-QB4) or Algebraic Notation (e4-e5).

Participants are also required to provide their own tournament size chess set and chess clock during all official playing rounds.

The official Fide Laws of Chess will govern the tournament, while ground rules will be announced in detail by the tournament director during the opening ceremonies on August 10.

For more information, interested parties may contact project director Nathaniel Viaje (0919-455-0494); tournament chairman Dr. Alfonso Teorima (0920-904-1953) or tournament director Dodz Felisilda (0909-519-0661).

Prizes are P5,000 gift certificate plus 42-inch four-legged 'King' trophy courtesy of Rev. Pedro Taton for the champion; for the first runner-up, a P4,000 gift certificate plus 35-inch four legged 'Queen' trophy courtesy of Mr. Ricardo 'Ricky' Yanson Jr. of Dynamic Builders and Construction; for the 2nd runner-up, a P3,000 gift certificate plus 30-inch four-legged 'Rook' trophy courtesy of Sungem Pharma; for the 3rd runner-up, a P2,000 gift certificate plus 25-inch four-legged 'Bishop' trophy, courtesy of lawyer Leo Sombiro; and for the 4th runner-up, a P1,000 gift certificate plus 21-inch four-legged 'Knight' trophy courtesy of Rufo Gasapo, president of Bacolod Adventist Medical Center.
