Cha-cha won't uplift indigent Negros workers: KMU

THE Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) Negros said Wednesday that moves to change the Charter "will not uplift the worsening state of Negros workers in the haciendas and sugar mills."

"Instead, Charter change will free the President (Gloria Arroyo) from cases of corruption and plunder when she ends her watch in 2010," said a KMU statement furnished Sun.Star Bacolod.

"The use of the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity, the recent military offensives in Mindanao and quick ride on a Senate resolution on federalism are calculated moves of Mrs. Arroyo to extend her term beyond 2010. It will not benefit the sugar and mill workers in any way," said Ronald Ian Evidente, KMU Negros spokesperson.

He said Charter change is meaningless for the workers. “It is the political survival of the present president and an assurance that she will not be prosecuted after her term that is behind the resurrection of Cha-cha."

Meanwhile, KMU advised Negrense political leaders "to be critical on the issue and stop parroting Malacañang on the issue of Charter change just to please Arroyo in order to have more projects before 2010."

Evidente called on all Negrenses to unite and oppose anew "this shameful and anti-people charade of Malacañang."

"Changes in the form of government will not uplift people's lives if state leaders would continue to be subservient to foreign dictates. Arroyo's economic policies and multilateral agreement always favor imperialist countries for cheaper labor and raw materials. Our workers will continue to live in misery due to low wages and unemployment while the peasants will remain landless," KMU added.
