Thursday, August 21, 2008 Mustangs gun for 3rd win in NBA Gov's Cup By Henry C. Villalva
THEY started the series with back-to-back losses then got back slowly into the win column with consecutive wins over Silay City (101-75) and Hinigaran (106-83).
On Thursday, the West Negros University Mustangs hope to tally their third win for a 3-2, win-loss slate going into this weekend's schedule in the ongoing Negros Basketball Association (NBA) 1st Gov. Isidro Zayco Invitational Cup '08 when they battle La Carlota City, 6PM, at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.
Once again, the Mustangs are expected not to field their top three gunners - Ely Olarte, Alfie Villariza and Vengie Vergara - lengthily, not allowing fancied Pamplona Bulls to scout their aces in preparation for the WNU-Pamplona Bulls clash on Sunday, August 24, 6 p.m.
In posting their 106-83 thrashing of winless Hinigaran last Tuesday, coach Jack Tumayan went to his second stringers for the scoring, getting 18 points from Jetric Sumido, 16 from Briton Javelona and 14 from seldom used Ryan Flores while Villariza chipped in with 15, Olarte with nine and Vergara with just one trey.
Going into this week's schedule, powerhouse Ticel-Iloilo is on top of the eight-team standings with an immaculate 4-0, win-loss card, followed by dark horse Cadiz City, 4-1, while the WNU Mustangs, Province of Negros Occidental and La Carlota City are in third with 2-2 slates followed by Silay City (2-3), Pamplona Bulls with 1-2, and Hinigaran, 0-4.
