Saturday, August 30, 2008 Tanpinco rules Kuala Lumpur tourney
BACOLEÑA amateur golfing ace Anya Tanpinco scrambled for a closing five-over 77 then went on to outplay Hong Kong's Demi Mak in sudden death to top the Royal Selangor Ladies Amateur Open Golf tournament last Thursday at the Royal Selangor Golf Club's new course in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The ICTSI-backed Negrense, who is a past Southeast Asian Games champion, made a par on the playoff hole then watched Mak flub her own bid from six feet to clinch the win almost three months following her victory over Carmelette Villaroman for her second straight RP Amateur title here in Bacolod City.
Tanpinco proved much steadier than championship flightmates Agnes Sudjasmi of Indonesia and Ginger Mak of Hong Kong in final day action at the tough par-72 layout, finishing with three bogeys in the last three holes for that 77 and a 54-hole aggregate of 227.
Sudjasmi, who led by four over Tanpinco after 36 holes, lost her touch and rhythm and eventually limped home with an atrocious 82, dropping to third place at 228. (HCV)
