Saturday, September 27, 2008 Students told to cope with modernization
NEGROS Occidental 5th District Representative Ignacio Arroyo urged participants to the 8th Division Step skills development and competition to learn and cope with the rapid modernization.
He was the keynote speaker during the opening of the three-day Step competition.
The competition participated in by 840 high school students from 58 secondary schools under the Division of Negros Occidental was held at the V.P. Ligason Cultural Center in La Castellana National High School Friday.
“The need to learn and be able to cope with the rapid modernization and technology becomes a necessity to move forward," Arroyo told the students.
He said that as delegates to this competition, "you were chosen from among your peers because of your technological skills and abilities. In this competition, you will realize a lot more of your potentials to prepare you for another competition; a competition to survive in the real world of modern technology."
Provincial Board member Enrique Miguel ‘Guding’ Lacson also told the participants to “explore the world of opportunities, know their talent, harness and develop for future excellence.”
La Castellana Mayor Alberto Nicor Jr. also challenged the young participants to make a big difference out of something they experienced.
This as the mayor believes that through the youth’s knowledge and skills, there is still hope to improve the country's economy.
Also gracing the occasions were Negros Occidental Schools Division superintendent Dr. Rizalino Tortosa, assistant schools superintendent Frank Trio and Jose Freddie Mocon, among other DepEd-Neg. Occ. Division supervisors, school heads, municipal officials and barangay officials.
The 8th Step skills development and competition will end on Sunday with the coronation of this year’s Mr. and Ms. Step as highlight.
Arroyo also lauded the La Castellana National High School for being adjudged as the Most Environment-Friendly School in Negros Occidental this year and for emerging as the regional champion in DepEd’s ‘Brigada Eskwela’ campaign.
School principal Tressa Elbanbuena said they will also be competing soon in the national finals.
