Friday, October 03, 2008 UNO-R community organizes program in Granada
THE fourth year Mass Communication students of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) organized a community organizing program last September 21 in Hacienda Oliva 2, Barangay Granada, Bacolod City.
Showcased during the program were the skills of mothers in making the best atchara and the conduct of fun-filled games for the children.
Farming is the source of livelihood of the hacienda people. They spent almost all their time working in the sugarcane plantation. When off season comes, hunger and where to get the money for their daily needs are their primary problems. There is also no annual fiesta in the hacienda.
The 1st atchara-making contest organized by the nine enthusiasts in the field of community organizing gave them the motivation to be productive. This was the legacy that the Mass Comm students left to somehow strengthen the community.
This livelihood would not cost them much since they could easily find the ingredients in their own backyard. This promotes good venue for extra income and for their own consumption.
Games were also held and enjoyed by the kids. These include ‘lumba-anay pang-os tubo’, ‘statue dance’, and simple practical trivia designed to bring out energy and fun, while some kids shared their talents. They were given prizes from McDonald’s SM-City, Bacolod and Syano Artlink & AAB-Negros.
Winners in the atchara making contest were also given prizes.
The activity was the final requirement of fourth year Mass Communication students in their community organizing (COMORG330) major subject. Present in the program were the head of English & Mass Communication Dep’t. Mr. Rufus Javier, community organizing instructor and DYRL ‘Tatak Negrense’ host Chona Gosiaoco, PNP Station 5 community relations officer Joan Sayson and Hda. chair Mrs. Sofia Solis.
