ALFIE Villariza scored 40 points, 33 from the three-point area, as West Negros University nipped University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 90-88, Sunday at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School for the Mustangs’ third straight win in the ongoing NOPSSCEA basketball competition.
Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod likewise matched WNU’s record blasting ABE-IBC 158-68 as all of the Eagles scored, eight of them hitting double figures led by the vastly-improved Rogie Gelasan’s 22.
The Mustangs and Eagles will dispute leadership on October 4, 3PM, at the same venue following the USLS vs ABE-IBC match at 1:30. The Stingers are a cinch to win this one and will face UNO-R at 3PM on October 5 at Po Hang Gym as first round collegiate division hostilities end.
The Mustangs led throughout, 27-26, 58-44, 75-66 until the Rams rammed their way for a 22-15 windup, its best end game so far. It could have been an upset but time ran out on the Lizares Street boys.
Second round action starts October 6 with UNO-R expecting another easy win over ABE-IBC at 1:30PM followed by the USLS-CSA-B match at 3 o’clock, also at the same venue.
Tournament format is a double round robin elimination. No. 4 collides with No. 3 and the winner will challenge No. 2. Whoever prevails will dispute the title against the No. 1 team which enjoys the twice-to-beat advantage.
In the elementary division, Bacolod Tay Tung High School blasted St. John’s Institute, 77-49, Trinity Christian School dumped Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, 54-49, and St. Teresa’a Academy nipped Tangub Christian Academy, 56-53.
Jack and Jill PHHC succumbed to UNO-R, 45-55; USLS dropped SBS, 63-19; BCC mowed MCA, 46-36; CSA-B clawed TCA, 45-23; SJI clamped DBTI, 54-33.
USLS stung Jack and Jill City Heights, 52-15; Christian Academy of Bacolod defeated SBS, 55-39; and UNO-R collared MCA, 52-19.
UNO-R now leads bracket A with a 4-0 card and USLS 3-0. It is a toss up among BTTHS, TCS, DBTI and SJI in bracket B. The top two teams will enter the semi-final round in a crossover match set October 11 at the Po Hang Gym.
In the high school category, defending champion Silay Institute has no loss after three games and leads bracket A. LCC-Main and St. Sebastian International School are locked in second place with 2-1 slates.
Tangub Christian Academy has three straight wins in bracket B with West Negros University and Don Bosco Technical Institute on its tail. In bracket C, Mansilingan Christian Academy and UNO-R look sure of making it to the quarterfinal round. USLS is unbeaten in three games and St. Joseph’s School-La Salle in two and will be headaches for other qualifiers.
The top two in each bracket will move to the crossover quarterfinal matches on the 11th. Winners will then clash in the semi-final on the 12th and those who will prevail will meet for the championship on the 13th.
Girls and women’s basketball will follow when teams are finalized. BTTHS and MCA lineups are due for submission.
