RP lady golfers slip as Tanpinco falters

REIGNING RP national amateur champion Anya Tanpinco of Bacolod City was not spared from the strong winds it threw the country's lady golfers off balanced.

As a result, Team Philippines got off to a shaky start as it assembled a 10-over-par 156 at the onset of the Women's World Amateur Team Championships in Adelaide, Australia last Wednesday.

Tanpinco's ICTSI teammate Chichiro Ikeda scored a three-over par 76 at the Orange Club's par-73 East course. She canned three birdies, two at the front nine. But the wind-swept course showed its peculiar traits as the Filipina dropped a shot six times throughout the day.

Tanpinco's bright marks were her birdies on nos. 5 and 16.

"We're down but not out, I believe," Tanpinco told covering Manila newsmen yesterday. "We're actually hoping to post a better finish this time around, hopefully much better than the joint 30th finish in 2006 when the event was staged in South Africa."

Sweden pulled away from the pack after it assembled a nine-under-par 137 and appeared headed to hoisting the coveted Espiritu Santo Trophy at stake.
Spain was eight strokes behind at 145 and a shot back further was Japan at 146.
Six other teams-Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Brazil and Austria-were tied at 147 for fourth place.

The RP girls are being sponsored by Philippine Airlines, Stradcom Corp., Dynamic Sports and LORO Shirts and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)./hcv
