WNU Mustangs firm up Champions League stint
By Henry C. Villalva

REIGNING collegiate NOPSSCEA champions West Negros University Mustangs posted their sixth straight victory in the ongoing 2008 NOPSSCEA men's basketball competition.

With a 99-81 victory over the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams last Wednesday at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School, the win served to firm up the Mustangs' lofty billing as the No. 1 Bacolod team.

The team is going into the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Champions League Western Visayas regional eliminations that reel off on October 18 and 19 at the WNU Gym hosted by the LNA7 Sports Foundation Inc. chaired by Anthony Carlo Agustin.

Also last Wednesday, the University of St. La Salle Stingers demolished ABE-IBC, 111-63.

Also at the Po Hang Gym, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Eagles won by default over ABE-IBC while the WNU Mustangs scored their seventh straight win in the series via a 94-60 demolition of the USLS Stingers.

The collegiate team standings now have WNU on top at 7-0, CSA-B 5-2, USLS 4-3, UNO-R 2-5 and ABE-IBC 0-8.

Games on Friday at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum pit the USLS Stingers against the UNO-R Rams at 1PM followed by the game between WNU and CSA-B at 3 o'clock, marking the last day of the double elimination round, said tournament manager Henry Doble.

On Saturday, Oct. 11, high school division quarterfinal games reel off at 8AM with Bracket A No. 1 and defending champion Silay Institute taking on Bracket d No. 2 St. Joseph's School-La Salle. At 10 o'clock, it will be the collegiate division No. 4 team against the No. 3 team at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.

In the afternoon at the Neg. Occ. Multi-Purpose Activity Center (NOMPAC), it will be MCA versus WNU at 2:30PM and USLS versus LCC-Main at 4 o'clock while at the USLS-IS covered court, it will be Tangub Christian Academy against UNO-R at 6PM.

In the afternoon, it will be the elementary division semi-finals starting at 1:30PM with University of St. La Salle-Integrated School against St. John's Institute while at 3 o'clock, Bacolod Tay Tung High School will go up against University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.

It will thus be the WNU Mustangs against the No. 2 Iloilo team which is John B. Lacson Maritime University on the first day of the Collegiate Champions League regional elims at the WNU Gym while the No. 2 Bacolod team, most likely the CSA-B Eagles, tangles against Iloilo's No. 1 University of Iloilo on the same day with the first day winners clashing against each other and the losers also taking on each other on the second day to determine the final placement of teams.
