40 teams join MassKara street, arena dance showdown

AROUND 40 teams will take part in this year's MassKara street and arena dance competition from October 16-18 at the Bacolod public plaza and the electric MassKara site along Lacson Street.

Dubbed "Bacolod, City of the World," the yearly festival has gathered 22 entries in the barangay level and 11 in the schools category while 10 barangays will participate in the 1st electric MassKara dance showdown.

The MassKara Festival street dance costumes and masks of participating schools and barangays will be exhibited at Robinsons Place starting Wednesday until October 20. Judging of the costumes and masks will also be done Wednesday, October 15.

The competition will kick off with the school category on Thursday, October 16, 1 p.m., at the Bacolod public plaza featuring dancers from Mandalagan Elementary School, Alfredo Montelibano Sr. Elementary School, Rafael Alunan Elementary School, Jose Gonzaga Elementary School, Rizal Elementary School, ETCS I and Sum-ag Elementary School in the elementary level.

In the secondary level, participating performers will come from the Domingo Lacson National High School, Alangilan National High School, Bacolod City National High School and Handumanan National High School.

On October 17, Friday, from 1-6 p.m., the barangay level competition will showcase entries from barangays 9, 17, 22, 23, 28, 30, Cabug, 25, 7, Bata, 4, Mandalagan, 8, 27, 29, 19, Alangilan, Handumanan, 12, 37, 36 and 41.

Meanwhile, eight teams will battle it out in the electric MassKara category, 7 p.m., along Lacson St. They are the groups from barangays Singcang Airport, Villamonte, 11, 16, 13, 26, 39 and 33. The first electric MassKara street dance competition will open the curtain for year 2 of the electric MassKara celebration.

The open category is set October 18, Saturday, at the Bacolod public plaza. The top 10 barangays in the 2007 MassKara Festival arena and street dance competition are pre-qualified to join the 2008 competition. The top 10 winners in the barangay category will also be qualified to join along with the top three in the schools category, both elementary and secondary.

This year's street dance competition will also feature the candidates to the search for MassKara Queen 2008 in their festival costumes. They will be joining in the parade of street dancers in the barangay category on Friday. This is part of the MassKara Queen Committee's efforts to re-integrate the pageant into the whole MassKara festivities.

There will be two areas of competition: street dance and arena performance.
Criteria for judging the street dance are: dance consistency - 10 percent; choreography - 15 percent; performance (showmanship, mastery, unity) 15 percent; and production design (mask, costume, props) 10 percent for a total of 50 percent.

The criteria for judging the arena performance involve theme/concept (adherence to the 2008 festival theme/ concept) 10 percent; choreography 15 percent; performance (showmanship, mastery, unity) 15 percent and production design (mask, costume, props) 10 percent for a total of 50 percent.

The scores in each area will have equal weight and winners will be based on average ranking system. The winners in the dance competition in the school, barangay and open-category will receive the following prizes: Open category - 3rd prize (P50,000), 2nd prize (P75,000) and 1st prize (P100,000); barangay category - 3rd prize (P50,000), 2nd prize (P75,000) and 1st prize (P100,000); schools category - 3rd prize (P10,000); 2nd prize (P20,000); and 1st prize (P30,000).

Special awards include best concept, best mask, best costume, best in choreography, best in call and response and the people's choice for the top street dance group.
