10 sports to get bigger slice of PSC budget

NEGRENSE commissioner Eric Loretizo of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) said Wednesday the PSC will prioritize its financial assistance on 10 "focus sports" for the coming 2009 Southeast Asian Games in Laos and other scheduled international meets this year.

Loretizo said the government sports funding agency came up with its decision during an executive board meeting held last Monday, January 5.

Loretizo explained to Manila sports reporters that the P30 million budget, which the commission has set aside for the SEA Games, will be allocated mainly for the preparation of athletes in aquatics, athletics, boxing, taekwondo, shooting, archery, weightlifting, fencing, judo and wrestling.

“We want these 10 focus sports to expect a big slice of our budget," Loretizo was quoted as saying at the end of the five-hour PSC board meeting.

Aside from the focus sports, however, the PSC has also identified other sports disciplines which it is bent on supporting since these sports have a history of qualifying athletes to the Olympics.

Included in the second priority list are: triathlon, sailing and windsurfing, bowling, billiards, wushu, cycling and rowing.

Loretizo, who is the commissioner in charge of football and volleyball, earlier told Sun.Star that the PSC still intends to help fund the training of athletes in the national pool who do not belong to the identified focus sports. (HCV0
