Thursday, January 08, 2009 Patafa names 3 Negrenses to PSC
AT LEAST three Negros Occidental athletics standouts have been named by the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (Patafa) to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as members of the national training pool for the 2009 Southeast Asian Games in Laos.
The Negrense hopefuls, who are part of the 20 standouts recommended by Patafa, are hammer thrower Arniel Ferrera of Cauayan, Negros Occidental; triple jumper Joebert Delicano of Victorias City; and long distance runner (10,000 meters) Julius Sermona of Himamaylan City, a former National Milo Marathon champion.
The athletes were recommended by Patafa head Go Teng Kok.
Others in the elite list are SEAG long jump title holder Henry Dagmil, Maristela Torres (long jump); Rene Herrera, (3,000 meters); Julius Nierras (400 meters); Mercedita Manipol (5,000 meters); Danilo Fresnido (javelin throw); Ernie Candelario (400 meters); Rosie Villarito (javelin throw); Mary Grace Melgar (400-meter hurdles); Arnold Villarube (decathlon); Midel Dique (800 meters); Eduardo Buenavista (marathon); Jho-an Banayag (marathon); Rodrigo Tanuan Jr. (400 meters); Eliezer Sunang (shot put); and Deborah Ann Samson (pole vault).
Go said they have already lined up a series of local and international exposure tournaments for the recommended athletes in preparation for the SEAGames in Laos and that they are hoping for the approval by the PSC. (HCV)
