Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Jo Tankers Shipping scholars in 1-day boot fest at JBLCF By Henry C. Villalva
THIRTY-THREE scholars of the Jo Tankers Shipping Lines at the John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation in Bacolod City will undergo their physical development training requirement through a one-day invitational football competition on January 23 at the JBLCF football grounds.
"The 9-a-side football tournament will be used as a means for us to search for talents who will eventually replace 11 scholars who are set to graduate this semester and will immediately be boarding Jo Tankers shipping Lines vessels as seamen regulars," said Warren Concepcion, coordinator and former University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos varsitarian.
The 33 scholars have been enjoying free tuition, free board and lodging and other privileges while studying at the JBLCF as part of the Jo Tankers Shipping Lines scholarship package for deserving Negrense students.
Concepcion, a former deputy secretary-general of the Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa), said the management of Jo Tankers Shipping Lines is an avid football enthusiast and has indicated its preference for using football as a medium for physical development among its scholars.
"Who knows our one-day football competition will be able to unveil some potential football talents from among the scholars who may later be tapped for major football competitions involving Negros teams. This way we will be able to contribute our humble share for football development here in our province," Concepcion said.
