Report erring cops, crimes through text: PNP By Ernie N. Olson, Jr.
ALL Smart and Globe cellular telephone service subscribers, who want to report the activities of so-called 'rascals in uniform' or police personnel who may be described to be abusive, impolite and corrupt, may now send their complaints by text to the Philippine National Police and be assured of immediate response.
This can be done by simply typing PNP, their message or complaint and sending this to PNP text hotline number 2920.
Senior Insp. Jovita Garcia, chief of the Police-Community Relations Branch of the Baguio City Police Office, disclosed that this was part of their plan to "win the hearts and minds of the people by projecting a positive image for the PNP."
She explained that the project, dubbed TXT PNP 2920, is being done mainly to minimize, if not to totally eradicate extortion, bribery, graft and corruption, as well as mulcting and other illegal activities of police personnel nationwide, and also to enjoin the community to participate in the campaign to regain the people's trust and confidence in the PNP.
She added that Supt. Francisco Manalo Jr., BCPO director, already instructed the PCRB to inform the public about this innovative project through the media.
"Overall, the BCPO has not created the correct environment for the effective receipt of reports from the community to identify and crack down on `rascals in uniform' or the ABaKaDang (Abuso, Bastos, Kotongero at may Di kanais-nais na gawain na) Pulis," Manalo pointed out, referring to some policemen who may be considered to be abusive, impolite, corrupt and unfit members of the PNP.
The TXT PNP 2920 project is a brainchild of PNP Director-General Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., who first launched it in Metro Manila late last month to provide everybody with a nationwide telephone hotline and text messaging service for speedier reporting and response for police assistance.
This innovative text messaging service also serves as a convenient medium for concerned citizens to report the incidence of crimes, provide confidential information regarding the activities of corrupt policemen, organized criminal syndicates and gangs, as well as suspected terrorists and wanted persons.
