SLU grads come home for medical mission By May Anne Cacdac
THE Christmas spirit of gift-giving is still definitely in the air.
Two balikbayan medical doctors, who are graduates of Saint Louis University were in town for a two-day medical mission that started Monday and ended Tuesday at Camp 6, Tuba, Benguet.
Drs. Felix Emmanuel Herrera and Felixberto Mamaril, both residents of and working in the United States came back to the Philippines to give back to the community.
They held the successful medical mission with the help of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center-Emergency Room (BGHMC-ER) staff, under the supervision of Dr. Manuel Quirino. Medical interns of SLU were also in hand for the mission.
"I am so happy that more and more Filipino doctors working abroad are coming back with missions like this one," said Dr. Manuel Quirino over an interview with Sun.Star Tuesday.
Herrera, originally from Puerto Princesa City, graduated from SLU in 1981. He is currently a fellow at the American Board of Family Practice and is also in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mamaril is from Camp 6, Tuba, Benguet and is also a 1981 graduate of SLU. He is now a diplomat at the American Board of Family Practice. He and wife, Amelita, also a doctor in the pediatrics, live in New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Both Mamaril and Herrera are overwhelmed by the number of patients who came to the mission for treatment.
"We had to call for back-up when we realized that the two of us won't be able to attend to all the patients. It seems like the whole barangay came," said Mamaril.
Mamaril and Herrera brought with them medicines, which were given out to the patients free of charge.
"We hope that more doctors working here and abroad will follow our example. We can serve the foreigners, why not serve our own people?" Herrera stressed.
The medical mission was an offshot of another medical-surgical mission early part of December last year.
The surgical mission was then headed by another balikbayan doctor, Manny Cacdac.
The previous mission was also held in coordination with the BGHMC.
