Water delivery group to 'save Burnham Lake' By Ernie N. Olson Jr.
THE Baguio-Benguet Water Cooperative, a group of 36 water delivery service operators based in the city, is offering to "save Burnham Lake" by supplying at least 200 truckloads of water to raise the artificial lagoon's waterline to its normal level.
This is in time for the Panagbenga Baguio Flower Festival fluvial regatta scheduled on Saturday, February 15.
As counterpart from the City government, BBWC will request City Hall to supply them with the fuel to haul the needed water from their respective points of origin or filling stations up to the lake itself.
"This may entail something like only five liters each," explained City Administrator Jose Taguba Friday afternoon.
Another was to exempt them from the ongoing experimental traffic number-coding scheme. "At least on the day of the delivery itself."
"It was noticed that Burnham Lake's water level was way below normal and this may have an adverse effect, if ever, on the conduct of the first Panagbenga fluvial regatta," Executive Assistant Noly Balatero of the City Mayor's Office added.
"By their doing this, it was just like showing that the spirit of volunteerism or the `bayanihan' system is still alive and kicking here in Baguio," he added.
The fluvial parade, which will be showcased as part of the Panagbenga BFF schedule of activities for the first time this year, is scheduled to open at 2:00 p.m. next Saturday.
The parade aims to showcase boats and their docking ports, which would be decorated with flower and plant arrangements, to make the promenade area around Burnham Lake have a "flower motif." Boat racing and a `Concert at the Lake' would be added features, they said.
