Gran Cordillera in historic Intramuros

THE Department of Tourism in the region is set to launch the Gran Cordillera Festival in the historic Intramuros in Manila on March 4 as part of the department's massive campaign to endorse the region as a major tourist destination.

"The Cordillerans have so much to be proud of and we are keen on showing off the wealth that our region has. We are so rich culturally," said Edgar Jularbal, DOT-CAR's promotions manager.

The festival will showcase the different sights, sounds and products of the Cordilleras with scheduled performances by the Philippine Military Academy Band, the Baguio City National High School Glee Club, the PMA combo and other cultural groups from around the region. This year's Panagbenga winning marching bands and street dancers are also scheduled to perform.

Highlights of the festivity include the holding of the Baguio Tossed Salad Festival and the Shake, Baguio, Shake Festival. Both events will put the spotlight on the famous produce of the region - vegetables and strawberries.

Aside from live performances, there will also be an agricultural fair, where visitors and guests can avail themselves of Cordillera handicrafts; an art gallery and photo exhibit with artists from the Cordilleras displaying their talents; and a Cordillera Fashion Show, which will exhibit fabrics unique to region with Cordilleran designers at the forefront.

There will be film showing on life in the region, investment opportunities and regional concerns. Product demos on strawberry and the carrots and other regional produce will also be conducted.

Dispelling rumors that Benguet has backed out of the festival, Jularbal said that the province is very much a participant still. "If they do have any plans of backing out, they haven't made anything official yet."

The province is set to stage the King Carrot Cake Festival on March 15.

The Cordillera Guidebook will be launched simultaneously with the DOT-CAR website on the opening day of the festival. No entrance fees are to be collected on all the specified venues. Region 1 is scheduled to take over CAR on March 16.
