High-powered arms seized from mayor's men in checkpoint By Ernie N. Olson Jr. & Larry Madarang
BENGUET -- Two personal bodyguards of an Abra mayor were arrested for illegal possession of three high-powered assault pistols during checkpoint operations being conducted along the Abra-Kalinga Road over the weekend.
The suspects were identified on Saturday by Senior Supt. Benjamin Magalong, chief of the Police Regional Office in the Cordilleras (PRO-CAR) Operations & Plans Division, as Joey Gumabay, Ernesto Dagisan, Joseph Aquias and Jenevieve Trinidad.
An investigation conducted by personnel assigned to the PRO-CAR's 1st Regional Mobile Group disclosed later that Dagisan and Aquias are personal bodyguards of Langilang Mayor Lizardo Sinogo.
According to Magalong, elements of the PRO-CAR's 1st RMG were conducting a checkpoint at Lagangilang, Abra, when they chanced upon the suspects.
The suspects were inside a Mitsubishi L-300 van with plate number TMF-494, but upon an inspection of said vehicle, operatives seized an Uzi machine pistol, one Colt M16-A1 baby armalite rifle and one .9mm Patriot MP9-25 pistol from the suspects.
As of presstime Saturday, all four suspects were reportedly arrested after charges for their alleged violation of Presidential Decree 1866 or illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as amended, were prepared for filing against them.
It was not known, however, if they were detained in jail or allowed to post bail for their alleged violation.
