Dad wants to know use of iodized salt By Harley Palangchao
COUNCILOR Galo Weygan surmised Wednesday that the public could have been hoodwinked for several years or that their IQ never improved even after using iodized salt.
Weygan said that according to Dr. Vicente Mendoza Escobar, a local scientist who devotes his time in studying food items, iodized salt loses its iodine content when use as cooking salt, which is a common practice in every household.
"If this allegation is true, then there is a misinformation in the implementation of Republic Act 8172 commonly known as the Asin Law by the Department of Health," Weygan said.
The councilor also noted that the Asin Law does not qualify or give information on how iodized salt is to be used, thus many Filipinos believe that it is for general use as table and cooking salt.
Wegyan noted that the city government even adapted a resolution to implement Asin Law in the locality, following a massive information campain by the DOH on the health benefits of the iodized salt.
To clarify things, Weygan has requested the DOH-CAR to prove or confirm the truthfulness of Escobar's report and release the necessary information on iodized salt.
If the report is true, Weygan said he will request Congress to amend the law before the public continues to be hoodwinked due to ignorance on the true benefits of the iodized salt.
