Character city program launching slated Monday
By Aileen P. Refuerzo

THE City Government's renewed drive to foster positive character values among the citizenry will officially begin Monday with the launching of the Character City program during the City Hall flag-raising rites.

Mayor Bernardo Vergara, who chairs the Character First Baguio City Committee created to oversee the program, is encouraging city workers and residents to take the program seriously stressing its noble intention of reviving the positive values and attitudes for which Baguio residents are known.

Councilor Elmer Datuin, committee vice chair, said the launching program will focus on the theme "Advocacy and Internalization through Networking" to emphasize the need to drumbeat support for the program.

The character program will fire off with the promotion of hard work as the character trait in focus for the month of July.

Under the program, a certain character trait will be featured and promoted for each month of the year. This trait will serve as theme for the activities in the city to impress upon the residents the value of the said virtue in keeping with the program's thrust of imbibing the character traits in the consciousness of people and eventually put them in practice.

To espouse hard work, defined as working diligently to achieve a desired goal, residents are advised to adopt the following mottos:

"I will treat my job as important;

"I will be an energy-giver;

"I will put my whole heart into what I do; and

"I will not be discouraged by failures."

The project began when the City Council approved a resolution declaring Baguio as a character city to accomplish the city government's thrust for thorough character reformation.

Vergara, through an administrative order, affirmed the designation of Baguio as character city and created a committee to formulate and intensify full-scale citywide and community-based program of activities to implement and foster positive character values in every citizen endeavor in the schools, businesses, churches, city government, media, community groups and families.

Accordingly, the implementation of programs to instill character values in the citizenry is in line with the city vision as follows: "We want a progressive peaceful clean and green Baguio - A center for education, trade and family-oriented tourism - managed by God-loving and strong-willed leaders in partnership with self-reliant and disciplined citizenry."
