Top brgy. nutrition councils, scholars honored Aug. 1 By Julie G. Fianza
BAGUIO City's best performing Barangay Nutrition Council and Barangay Nutrition Scholars will be honored on August 1 at the Hotel Supreme during ceremonies ending the celebration of July as nutrition month.
Set to receive the awards after being adjudged as outstanding BNS among all barangay entries is Delia San Juan of New Lucban, Lucban district while second to ninth placers, respectively are Estrella Reyes, Poliwes; Cerina Buendia, MRR-Queen of Peace; Elsie Bacod, Happy Hollow; Joan Alvez, Salud Mitra; Rosemarie Garabiles, East Modernsite; Magdalena Palencia, Country Club; and Diana Gajorena of Irisan.
Said nutrition workers and barangays were chosen after thorough evaluation headed by City Agricultural Officer Alberto Tomas, in coordination with representatives from the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, City Social Welfare and Development Office and the Department of Trade and Industry.
With this year's nutrition month theme "Kabataan Palusugin, Isulong ang Breastfeeding," the Baguio City Nutrition Council, in cooperation with other line agencies, has scheduled various barangay and school-based activities including lectures and counseling, seminars, feeding programs and contests.
Other activities are the micronutrient supplementation for vitamin A, iodine deficiency and anemia detection being staged at the BGHMC until the end of the month.
Poster and slogan-making contests shall be conducted on July 19 for interested constituents at San Antonio barangay while a puppetry show with emphasis on proper nutrition shall be performed for Irisan barangay street children.
Also on the same date, the senior citizens of Salud Mitra barangay will take the spotlight, as one of them shall be selected as "healthiest senior citizen."
Cooking contests and demonstrations will also be held for Loakan and Pacdal district, Salud Mitra, Aurora Hill, Engineers Hill and City Camp Central on July 18, 19, 20, 27 and 29, respectively.
Other barangays will hold the search for "Little Miss and Mr. Nutrition" on various dates during the month.
The Philippine National Red Cross also participates in the activities as it sponsors the film showing activities regarding HIV-AIDS Monday and launches the community health water station and mini-store on July 28.
Barangay nutrition workers will give lectures on proper nutrition, inspect iodized salt outlets, attend and re-echo nutrition trainings to their respective barangays until the end of July.
