Child center inauguration ends nutri month celebration

AN ART-INSPIRED mother and child activity center at the Baguio Health Department compound will be inaugurated July 30 while top barangay nutrition workers will be honored on August 1, highlighting the culminating activities for nutrition month.

Launched a year ago, the ribbon-cutting and turn-over ceremonies for the mother and child activity center will be graced by city officials led by Rep. Mauricio Domogan, Mayor Bernardo Vergara and Connie Angeles, Shoemart Foundation project director.

Donated by SM foundation, in coordination with the City Government to foster mother and child bonding, the center features art-inspired walls, toys and educational paraphernalia.

Newly installed Benguet State University President Rogelio Colting will grace the awarding ceremonies for outstanding barangay nutrition workers to be held at the Supreme Hotel.

Set to receive the awards after being adjudged as outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars are Delia San Juan of New Lucban, Lucban district; Estrella Reyes, Poliwes; Cerina Buendia, MRR-Queen of Peace; Elsie Bacod, Happy Hallow; Jo-Ann Alvez, Salud Mitra; Rosemarie Garabiler, East Modernsite; Magdalena Palencia, Country Club and Diana Gaionera of Irisan.

Barangay health workers who have served for five, 10 and 15 years shall also be accorded honors during the ceremonies.

Barangay chiefs also set to receive awards for their respective barangays as best performing Barangay Nutrition Councils are Emmanuel Cabe of Ferdinand barangay; Manuel Serafica, MRR-Queen of Peace; Nida Galace, Salud Mitra; Dencio Almag, Country Club; Leon Tacata of Sto. Niņo; Simon Leganzo, Poliwes; Joseph Sacley, Happy Hallow; Rogelio Estepa, East Modernsite; and Bernardo Calatan of Irisan.

The nutrition workers and barangays were chosen after thorough evaluation by a committee headed by City Agriculturist Alberto Tomas, the Baguio City Nutrition Council, representatives from the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, City Social Welfare and Development Office, the Department of Trade and Industry, in cooperation with other concerned agencies.

Barangay and school-based activities such as lectures and counseling, seminars, feeding programs, cooking contests and demonstration, micronutrient supplementation for vitamin A, iodine deficiency and anemia detection, search for Little Miss and Mr. Nutrition and film showing were also accomplished as part of the nutrition month celebration.
