Baguio Day 2003 activities slated

SPREAD over a two-month period, various activities which include art and photo exhibits, cultural and literary-musical shows, medical-dental missions, sports and animal shows, clean and green activities, the Baguio food festival and the Ms. Baguio beauty contest have been scheduled for the celebration of Baguio Day 2003.

The city's charter change and community concerns shall be on focus on Sept. 11 while and educational forum follows on Sept. 12, both to be done at the Baguio Convention Center with the general public, private sector and Baguio's officials as target participants.

Rep. Mauricio Domogan and Mayor Bernardo Vergara and the city officials are expected to be in the forefront of the said activities.

For the whole month of August, contestants for Ms. Baguio shall go through the press launching, swimwear, talent, long gown, day wear competitions at various venues within the city to decide who wears the crown during the coronation night, end of August at the Baguio Convention Center.

On Aug. 18-21, "Pangarap: A play on the life of Fernando 'Tatay' Bautista", founder of the University of Baguio, shall be presented also at the convention center for viewing of the public.

Baguio's growth through the years shall also be showcased through an art-photo exhibit on Aug. 25 to Sept. 30 at the City Hall multi-purpose function room.

For Baguio sports enthusiasts, Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 are reserved for the Mr. Baguio bodybuilding competition at the BCC and golf and fun run at various venues respectively. Dog shows shall also be staged at the Melvin Jones football field on Aug. 30-31.

Also expected to whet up the appetites of music enthusiasts for their own type of music are the following: a band showdown featuring the University of Baguio, Saint Louis University and the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) bands at the BCC, 3PM on Aug. 30; a 300-voice choral concert at the same venue in the afternoon of Sept. 1; a drum and lyre competition at the Melvin Jones on Sept. 13; and folk and country music at the BCC on the same date.

An information technology fair shall be done on Sept. 2-6 while Sept. 20-27 shall be for the Baguio food fest and tossed salad, both at the BCC and for the general public.

A parade, program and a centennial ball also marks Baguio Day with the awarding of outstanding citizens and non-government organizations as highlight. As such, the committee-in-charge commenced the search for outstanding citizens last July.

Not to be outdone are the city's socio-civic groups who shall conduct medical and dental missions for the general public throughout the months of August and September.

Environmental concerns are also not overlooked since amidst the flurry of activities, citywide clean-up and tree-planting activities shall also be done.
