Relief operation for Quirino launched By Ramon Dacawi
"OPERATION Sayote", the relief operation born at the height of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption 12 years ago, has been re-launched, this time targeting calamity victims in Cabarroguis, the capital town of Quirino province that was ravaged by typhoon Harurot.
Project Coordinator Swanny Dicang, said Cabarroguis Mayor David Longid confirmed the massive destruction wrought by the typhoon and appealed for support to enable the victims to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
Dicang said Cabarroguis was chosen as many of its residents have relatives here and in other parts of the Cordilleras.
People willing to help may deliver non-perishable items to the regional office of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) at the Insular Life Bldg. below City Hall. Perishable items like sayote and other vegetables will be picked up before the mission.
"We will start from Baguio as soon as a truckload of donated items has been collected from Samaritans," Dicang said.
First launched on June 12, 1991 while Mt. Pinatubo was blowing its top and wreaking havoc in Central Luzon, "Operation Sayote" was able to deliver about 250 tons of relief goods in various parts of Bataan, Zambales and Pampanga.
In coordination with other agencies, the series of relief missions also reached out to the Bicol region, Banaue in Ifugao and Mankayan in Benguet.
