Mr. Baguio to be crowned tonight
By Delmar Cariņo

DETERMINED to step up its campaign against drug abuse, the City Government will host tonight a spectacular battle that displays the best in physical fitness -- the Mr. Baguio 2003 muscle war.

Mayor Bernardo Vergara and Councilor Edilberto Tenefrancia will lead other city officials in witnessing what has become the most-awaited muscle contest this rainy season, which will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Baguio Convention Center.

Named in honor of former Mr. Philippines and Councilor Nick Domalsin Sr., the contest, tagged as the Baguio Centennial Bodybuilding invitational, will draw blood in five weight divisions over three exciting but rigid rounds of muscle comparison.

The champion in each of the divisions - novice, flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight and open - will clash in a winner-takes-all finale to determine who will reign as Mr. Baguio until August 31 next year.

Seven fitness gyms in the city, with three others in La Trinidad, Benguet, have confirmed sending their best musclemen in this annual search, jointly organized by Michael Velasco of MRV Productions and Nick Domalsin Jr. of the Baguio City Bodybuilders Association.

Local bets, however, will have to flex their best to beat visiting competitors from other provinces who are poised to score and upset by attempting to bring home the overall crown plus P5,000.

Reigning national flyweight champion Fernando Faroden of the Baguio Health Club will guest pose with his form in preparation for his stint in the Southeast Asian Games to be held in Vietnam on December.

Former muscle champions Mabini, Maskay, Jas Taguiling, Winfeld Fanao, Alex Sison and Freddie Ares compose the panel of judges.
