Arroyo okays P3 billion for LGUs

PRESIDENT Arroyo approved the release of some P3 billion to the country's provinces, cities, municipalities and barangays for their developmental programs and projects, Interior and Local Government Sec. Jose Lina said.

The amount represents the unreleased fund for year 2001 Local Government Service Equalization Fund (LGESF).

Lina said Arroyo issued the order in a meeting held with him and the officers of the Union of Local Authorities in the Philippines, an umbrella organization of local government associations and the League of Provinces of the Philippines, led by its president and Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario.

Lina said the fund would be released by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to the LGus starting September 1.

The LGESF is part of the internal revenue allotment share as provided in the General Appropriations Act of 2001.

"The president ordered the release of the P3 billion because of the good collection of revenue this year," Lina said, adding that its release would surely hasten countryside development and boost the efforts in pump-priming the country's economy.

For their part, del Rosario and the local officials lauded the president's order saying this would allow the LGUs to plan, commit and utilize the amount for the development of their respective localities.

During the gathering, the local officials also reaffirmed their full support and commitment to the administration and condemned the July 27 Oakwood mutiny as well as the destabilization efforts of certain sectors of society.
