Bandits attack PNP camp; 2 cops killed, one hurt
By Harley F. Palangchao

TWO policemen were killed on the spot while another was seriously wounded when armed bandits attacked their detachment in Tabuk, Kalinga Wednesday night, the police reported Friday.

Senior Supt. Paul Mascarinas, director of the Kalinga Provincial Police Office, identified the fatality as SPO4 Rufino Galong and PO2 Rodrigo Merdadero. Wounded was identified as SPO2 Teolimo Baglitit, who is now recuperating at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital in Tabuk capital town.

Mascarinas reported that the policemen were members of the six-man team assigned to a police checkpoint near Nambaran barangay in Tabuk, Kalinga, where a series of robbery and holdup incidents were reported the past months.

He said a pursuit operation is ongoing to arrest the perpetrators who allegedly belong to the Tulgao tribe and are believed to be involved in series of robbery incidents in the province.

Kalinga Gov. Macario Duguiang said the perpetrators are members of the Tulgao tribe, which is why he immediately called that attention of Kalinga Rep. Lawrence Wacnang, a member of the Tulgao tribe, to mediate in the matter.

"The attack on a police detachment was really alarming considering that the perpetrators acted like notorious bandits," Duguiang stressed.

He added that he is seriously contemplating moves to request the 5th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army to deploy additional soldiers to beef up the police force in Kalinga.

"We have plans also to reassign some policemen (deployed to) peaceful municipalities to Tabuk because most of the heinous crimes are committed here," Duguiang said.
