Inter-barangay SK basketball tourney on By Ernie N. Olson Jr.
INTERESTED teams from the city's 128 barangays are enjoined to participate in the Inter-Barangay Sangguniang Kabataan Basketball Tournament 2003, which is being spearheaded by the Quezon Hill Proper SK and supported by the SK Federation of Baguio led by Councilor Leonardo Bayan Jr.
Scheduled on Nov. 8 and will run until Dec. 20 this year, the invitational tournament is open for teams who have a maximum of 15 players, whose ages range from 22 years old and below.
"This invitational tournament is being organized by the SK Council of Quezon Hill Proper and it aims to build up sportsmanship and camaraderie among the youth. Even at our young age, we hope to improve our individual talents by conducting friendly sports competitions and sharing our time with each other," said project proponent and Quezon Hill Proper SK chair Walter Olson Jr.
"This will also divert the attention of some of our wayward youth from the evil effects of drugs and alcoholism, and at the same time, maybe even create a pool of future professional athletes," said Olson.
He said the tournament not only aims to promote sports development among the youth, but also recognizes the role of the youth in sports development and to bring sports closer to the hearts of young individuals so as to provide a level of competition for them to attain teamwork and unity, reaffirming their role as "the hope of the nation."
The tournament will adopt a round-robin format where the top four teams will automatically compete in the semi-final round. The top two teams will have a 'twice to beat' advantage and the top two teams in the semi-finals will automatically engage in a 'best-of-three' championship match.
He stressed all players must be physically fit to play and prove this by submitting a doctor's certification.
College level players who are currently playing for the varsity teams of their respective schools are disqualified from joining the tournament to give more chances for other players to be discovered and developed.
To sweeten the pot, a cash prize of P3,500 will be awarded to the champion team, P2,500 to the team which finishes at first runner-up position, and P1,500 for the second runner-up.
The tournament is being supported by Councilor Leonardo Bayan Jr., Baguio SK Federation president, and Quezon Hill Proper punong barangay Angelita Padilla.
