4 die, 7 hurt in road mishap By Harley Palangchao
FOUR persons, including a driver, were killed while seven others were seriously injured in separate vehicular accidents that occurred in the capital town of Bontoc, Mt. Province, the civil defense office reported Wednesday.
Reports reaching the Office of the Civil Defense Office-Cordillera Administrative Region (OCD-CAR)) revealed that the vehicular mishaps involved a Rising Sun bus and a private van.
The passengers of the van with plate number TEU 200 who were killed were identified as Dario Pilican, driver, Michael Bubidang, George Mangay-an and Raymund Palecos. The lone survivor was named as Darwin Pinengeo.
SPO2 Isabelo Cacho of the OCD-CAR said the van was negotiating the Bontoc National Highway en route to Sabangan town when it suffered mechanical trouble and plunged into a 120-foot ravine at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
An hour earlier, a Rising Sun bus with plate number AYA 478 fell off a 10-foot ravine along sitio Ficoco, Samoki town while en route to Bontoc poblacion.
Injured were Caroline Anongos, Jona Cofulan, Heidi Atin, Bennie Samoy, Denden Malamnao and Benjie Pagtailan. They were all rushed to the Bontoc General Hospital for medical treatment, said Cacho.
Authorities are still determining the cause of the accident but Cacho claimed it is possible it was also due to a mechanical defect.
Earlier this month, nine passengers were killed and seven others were injured when the private jeepney they were riding plunged into a 200-meter ravine in sitio Sepang, Buguias, Benguet.
For decades, Benguet and Mt. Province residents have been complaining about the sorry state of the Halsema Highway, the main route connecting Benguet, Mt. Provice, Ifugao and rest of the Cordilleras.
Halsema is now being rehabilitated through a project funded by the World Bank.
