AFP, NPA clash; 2 amazons killed
By Harley F. Palangchao

CAMP ALLEN -- Two amazons were killed when 85 New People's Army (NPA) rebels engaged military troopers in a gun battle in Barangays Dicamay, San Mariano, Isabela province on Monday.

Lt. Col. Preme Monta, information officer of the AFP North Luzon Command (Nolcom), identified the slain amazons as Nenita Gaspar and one Ka Mira.

Military intelligence reports said Gaspar was the chairperson of Anak Bayan and Youth Christian Movement-Isabela.

Monta said government troopers, composed of combined forces of the 52nd and 53rd Reconnaissance Companies and 45th Infantry Battalion, recovered from the encounter site three kilos of improvised landmines, personnel belongings and valuable subversive documents.

The explosives, according to Lt. Gen. Romeo Dominguez, Nolcom chief, indicated plans by the rebels to stage a "show of force" on or before the 35th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) on Dec. 26.

To thwart further NPA attacks, Dominguez directed Maj. Gen. Samuel Bagasin, 5th Infantry Division chief, to "maintain momentum and give the enemy no room to execute their sinister plans."
