Firecracker vendors ask city dads for longer selling time
MEMBERS of the Baguio Retailers of Paputok, Lucis, Atbp. Association appealed to the City Council to allow them to sell their wares at Burnham Park from Dec. 20 to 31 this year.
Association head Agnes Montoya said allowing them more days to sell will enable their 20 members to recoup their investment and earn a reasonable amount this year considering the meager gain they had last year when they were only allowed to sell for two days before the New Year celebration.
Montoya said the members of the organization are licensed to sell pyrotechnic devices and have been involved in said business with the city for 11 years now subject to the rules and regulations that the city sets.
"For many years, we are the only group that has managed to get all the necessary permits from the national and local governments. While many dealers/sellers do so illegally, we have consistently done our trade always within bounds of the law and we intend to do so even in the future. Our group promises to police our ranks, and we will sell only items which have been authorized by the latest listings (provided) in the DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) memo," Montoya told the councilors.
The city council, however, deferred action on the request and referred the matter to the city police and the Office of the City Architect and Parks Superintendent (Ocaps) for comment and recommendation.
