Arnis, sikaran tilts today
"Pilipinong Pilipino Talaga," a sports fest under the wings of the Silahis ng Pasko 2003, will feature on Saturday two original martial art events at the Malcolm Square.
Competitions in arnis will start at 8:30 in the morning while sikaran fires off at 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon with Texas Instruments Philippines as the event sponsor.
Former Councilor Nars Padilla, executive chair of the Silahis ng Pasko, said over 100 athletes from Benguet, La Union, Ilocos Norte and host Baguio will see action in the competition.
Arnis warriors, who include a team from the Baguio City Police Office, will vie for honors in the small, medium and big divisions of the palaro.
The Sikaran, Arnis-Sincala Brotherhood Association of Baguio will also field its best players in a showdown against the city's PNP squad.
Padilla said CAR-Sikaran defending champion Philex Mines is ready and raring to go for their title defense against all comers.
Sikaran competition will focus on the kiddies class, women division, white belt, brown belt and black belt categories.
The day's tournament will be managed by a skilled technical staff headed by Emil Gonzales, Sikaran regional director, and retired police Insp. Rogelio Mejia, assistant regional director.
At stake are handsome trophies and medals for the three top winners in each event. Overall team championship trophies are also up for grabs, said Padilla.
Padilla said: "We are deeply appreciative and at the same time elated by the patronage of Texas Instruments Philippines for helping us develop and propagate arnis and sikaran. We hope that one day the two martial arts will be included in the regular calendar of sporting events by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
