Cordi cops warned of firing guns during holidays
ALL members of the Police Regional Office-Cordillera (PRO-CAR) were warned Tuesday of indiscriminate firing using their issued firearms during the Yuletide season. Those found violating the directive will be dismissed from service.
In issuing the order, Chief Supt. Rowland Albano, PRO-CAR director, told ranking police officers that PNP is an ardent advocate of less, even zero, stray bullet-related deaths during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
"Anyone caught (or found) firing their guns will be outrightly discharged from service after six days. So I strongly urged all of you to follow the order," Albano told ranking police officers during a command conference at Camp Bado Dangwa on Monday night.
Authorities earlier reported that most of the policemen, who were reported to be firing their guns during the Yuletide season, are based in the provinces.
In response to the order, policemen of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) sealed their guns' muzzles with white masking tape Tuesday to signify self-discipline and obedience to the order.
Supt. Francisco Manalo Jr., BCPO director, told reporters he has already notified ranking Baguio police officers to comply with Albano's order.
Manalo added the strict implementation of the order is a show of support to the government's Oplan: Iwas Paputok, which greatly contributed to the noted decrease in stray bullet-related deaths since 1995.
Dr. Manuel Quirino, chief of the Stop Death of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Service (BGHMC), said the annual budget for firecrackers and stray bullet-related injuries has also significantly reduced since the Oplan was launched.
Quirino reported that BGHMC has been spending P20,000 to P30,000 to treat firecracker-related incidents for the past six years. Harley F. Palangchao
