P23M dope destroyed in Kalinga, Ifugao

THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) regional office in the Cordilleras dealt a major blow against marijuana planters here following the destruction of more than P23-million worth of fully-grown cannabis sativa plants in Tinglayan, Kalinga and Hingyon, Ifugao, last week.

Supt. Danilo Flordeliza, PDEA-Cordillera Administration Region (CAR) director, reported that the latest marijuana eradication operation was conducted in line with the government’s determined drive to rid the region of the illegal hemp.

Flordeliza reported, however, that no marijuana cultivator was arrested during the operations conducted by operatives of the PDEA-CAR and the provincial police offices of Kalinga and Ifugao.

Last month, the PDEA-CAR reported that around P319-million worth of marijuana and shabu were confiscated as a result of 30 marijuana eradications and 157 buy-bust operations in the Cordilleras last year.

The PDEA-CAR director also reported that 189 suspected drug pushers and users, including foreigners, were arrested during various anti-illegal drug operations last year.

The Police Regional Office (PRO)-CAR, on the other hand, reported that more than 90 barangays in the region that were previously identified as drug-infested barangays have already been declared drug-free barangays.

Last week, PNP Deputy Director Egardo Aglipay presided over a command conference with PRO-CAR and PDEA-CAR officials here to get an update on the anti-illegal drugs operations in the region.

Authorities earlier reported that the Cordilleras remains to be the number one source of marijuana, supplying almost 70 percent of the total marijuana produce in the entire country.

The bulk of marijuana supplies are clandestinely transported from the hinterlands of Benguet, Kalinga, Ifugao and Mt. Province to other places in the country. Laurence Dominguez
