Sped students shine in 10th nat’l Special Olympics
By Jane Cadalig

THE Baguio Special Education students, who represented the city in the 10th national Special Olympic Games, garnered a total of 14 major awards during the event held March 3-6 in Marikina City.

The delegation was able to bring home a total of three gold medals, seven silver medals, and four bronze medals both in individual and team sports categories.

Constancio Guilod bagged three major prizes in the individual category. He won the first prize in the 200- meter dash run and the running long jump and placed third in the shot put.

Jackson Limmayog won the gold medal in the running long jump and placed second in the 100-meter dash run, while Mark Alvin Erot was the silver medalist in the shot put and the 100 and 200-meter dash runs.

Rosemarie Villanueva and Vivian Solis both bagged silver medals in the four-man bowling team and placed third in the bowling, doubles category. Alex Langgato got the second place in the same category.

The third prize winners for soccer are Jay Brian Antonio, Al Nasser Bayan, Denny Diwag, Crite Aries Lumiwes, Federico Palgue, Anthony Picson, and Christopher Vergara.

A source revealed the fund used by the team in their trip was merely a donation from concerned parents of a Special Education (Sped) student.

The source said Mr. and Mrs. Mont Davis shouldered the P25,000 financial requirement upon knowing from their son Allan Davis, a delegation member, that their trip to the olympic games was to be cancelled due to lack of funds.
It was learned that the fund allocated for the trip was realigned to an environmental seminar of the "fast learners" in Iloilo City.

Meanwhile, Councilor Federico Mandapat Jr. has proposed a resolution commending the winners as well as their team coaches.

He said the victory of the SPED students brought "pride and honor to the city and served as an outstanding example of the role Baguio’s differently-abled children play in the increasingly dynamic society."

The resolution added the delegation serves as inspirational role models to the city’s able-bodied and differently-abled residents, and asked that their respective cash incentives, pursuant to Ordinance 92-94, be immediately released.

The 19-member team was coached by Victoria Busoy, Teresita Pundo, Annaliza Langbis and Luz Soriano, all Sped teachers.
