Summer in Baguio activities start

"SUMMER Vacation (SumVac) in Baguio," the city's annual calendar of summer activities for residents and tourists has officially begun here.

Baguio City Mayor Bernardo Vergara said 34 activities, a mishmash of religious, cultural and sports treats have been lined for the three-month spectacle that aims to show that Baguio remains to be "the coolest place to beat the summer heat."

City Tourism Officer Benedicto Alhambra, events secretariat head, said various sports activities, medical mission and weekly concerts kicked off the summer event this month and will run until May.

Last week, the calendar featured a product demonstration the Church of Christ Evangelistic Crusade and the Know your Candidate forum of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Motorcycling enthusiasts had a ball with the holding of the "switch caravan" motorcycle exhibit at the Melvin Jones yesterday while arnis aficionados also took center stage via a two-day arnis tournament that will end today, Sunday, at the People's Park.

Midwives from all over the country will converge in the city for their national convention starting tomorrow, March 29, at the Baguio Convention Center. This will cap the March calendar of activities.

April treats will be ushered in by the summer arts explosion at the SM Baguio which will run from April 1-11. The 1st Baguio skateboard and bike competition will also unfold from April 1-14 at the Burnham Park skating rink.

On April 3, barangay tanods will undergo a skills enhancement project at the Melvin Jone football field while the Pharmaton 1-kilometer run will fire off on April 4 at the Melvin Jones. Holy Week activities will be highlighted by religious activities in various churches on April 4.

The city will also mount anew the SumVac tourist assistance operations to be spearheaded by the city police in cooperation with the various civic and communications groups in the city.

Radio station RPN-DzBS will air a lingkod bayan from April 5-11 while the city will commemorate the Araw ng Kagitingan with a program on April 7, 8AM, at the Veterans Park along Harrison Road.

On April 8, the local media group Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club will stage anew the annual search for lucky summer visitor. As in the past years, the lucky visitors who will be chosen from the throngs of tourists coming up to the city for the summer break will be accorded red carpet reception, free accommodation, guided tours and gifts.

Also on the same date, a concert crusade will be held at the Igorot Garden.
Easter Sunday activities include the 40 Day of Purpose at the Athletic Bowl and the Easter Sunday mass at the Burnham Park lake.

Post-Holy Week activities lined up are: summer youth and adult camp set April 12-17 and 19-24 at the Athletic Bowl and April 13-15 and 20-22 at the People's Park.

The Prudential lakbay parade and convention is set on April 14-17 while a food and drinks festival workshop for food service professionals, sponsored by Tram Inc., Camp John Hay and SM City, will be at the CJH Golf and Country Club.

On April 15, a "March for Jesus" will be held at the Melvin Jones grandstand and football field. Kite-flying enthusiasts will have their day on April 17-18 for the annual Bear Brand kite festival.

The Baguio Dance Academy will hold its ballet and dance recital on April 24, 7-9PM, at the SLU Center for Culture and the Arts while the Kafagway: Baguio liberation memorial rites will be held on April 24-27 at the Veterans Park and Melvin Jones to cap the April schedule.

The May calendar will be top-billed by the summer beach volleyball at the Baguio Athletic Bowl on May 14-16 and the santacruzan on the same date along the city thoroughfares and the Baguio Convention Center. (Aileen Refuerzo)
