Probe sought on Burnham fishkill
CONCERNED Baguio City and regional line offices will be requested to look into the fishkill that occurred at the Burnham Park lake where around 50 kilograms of carp and tilapia were found floating dead last week.
This developed as the reported fishkill might cause a major setback in the city's tourism sector after foul odor emanating from the lake was also reported since the Holy Week.
It was learned that the fishkill and foul odor at the city's biggest park was caused by direct flow of liquid waste to the Burnham Park lake. News reports said the waste came from the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center.
Many of the affected carp and tilapia were among the 50,000 fingerlings released at the lake during the World Food Day celebration in October 2000.
In a proposed resolution, Councilor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. requested the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar), the Office of the City Architect and Parks Superintendent and the Baguio Health Department to head the formal investigation.
Bautista said that other concerned government and private agencies could join the inquiry.
"All concerned government agencies must come up with a joint investigation to determine the cause of this incident and submit the same to the Office of the City Mayor and the City Council for action," Bautista said.
He added that conducting a formal probe the soonest possible time could give the city government the best recourse to address the problem.
He said since the foul odor was reported at the Burnham Park lake, many tourists and Baguio residents started to refrain from boat riding and strolling within the park.
Sources said some officials of the Alay sa Kalinisan Inc. were also reportedly disappointed after hearing of the fishkill. HFP
