Suspect in the killing of Abra VM bet nabbed By Harley Palangchao
CAMP DANGWA, Benguet -- The prime suspect in the killing of a vice mayoral bet in Lagayan, Abra on January 9 was arrested on Tuesday evening by joint police operatives, the police reported Wednesday.
Chief Supt. Rowland Albano, Police Regional Office-Cordillera (PRO-CAR) director, named the suspect as Cipriano Lapez Jr, who is facing murder charges in relation to the killing of Rommel Parinas early this year.
Albano said Lapez was arrested by virtue of a warrant issued by Abra Regional Trial Court Judge Corpuz Alzate. The suspect did not resist arrest, he added.
During tactical interrogation, police investigators were able to establish that Lapez was also the alleged leader of the nine armed goons that engaged the police to a 15-minute gunbattle in sitio Lucgay, Lagayan, Abra on Monday.
Senior Supt. Artemio Hicban, Abra Provincial Police Office director, reported the nine armed goons led by Lapez fled into different directions after the skirmish but police recovered some of their personal belongings.
The policemen were to conduct prophylactic patrol and clearing operations following a tip from concerned residents that a group of armed men were sighted near the place where incumbent Mayor and reelectionist Cecilia Luna was supposed to visit.
Lagayan is one of the five towns in Abra recommended to be placed under the control of the Commission on Elections owing to unchecked election-related violence.
The others are the capital town of Bangued, La Paz, Danglas and Tineg.
