3 Baguio studes drown in Tuba By Harley Palangchao
THREE students from Baguio drowned after they were swept away by strong river currents in Nangalisan, Tuba, Benguet on Monday.
The victims were identified by their families as Jan Siegfred Zarate, 15, a third year high school at the Saint Louis University (SLU) Boys High; Van Louie Balabag, 18, a second year college at Data Center and Marvin Rusuello, 18, a 2nd year accountancy student at SLU.
Lourdes Zarate, grandmother of the 15-year-old victim, said the three victims and their three other companions went to Nangalisan, Tuba Sunday night supposedly for a whole day swimming the following day.
At around 11:00 a.m. Monday, Rusuello was walking near the river when he accidentally fell off and was swept away by strong currents. Zarate and Balabag tried to save Rusuello but they also eventually drowned.
Retired Chief Insp. Jose Zarate, one of the victim's companions, also tried to rescue the victims but his effort turned futile.
The bodies of the three victims were recovered by seasoned swimmers at Nangalisan an hour after, their relatives reported.
As the incident happened, concerned barangay officials of Nangalisan cautioned swimmers not to go near the river without any companion to avoid any tragedy.
Ahead of the latest drowning incident, Benguet Gov. Raul Molintas requested that barangay officials in Tuba and Itogon adopt a local law requiring all visitors to Agno River and Asin River to inform concerned barangay officials of their presence and about their activities.
Molintas's request came following the drowning of two Belgian nationals at the Agno River late last year.
