Nolcom assures security of tourism execs, guests

CAMP ALLEN -- The military's North Luzon Command (Nolcom) Monday assured that government troopers are ready to thwart possible attacks by communist rebels during the upcoming tourism affairs in Central Luzon.

A number of contingents from the Cordillera and rest of Northern Luzon are expected to join the Central Luzon Tourism showcase aimed at promoting tourist spots and locally-produced products north of Metro Manila.

The activity will be held at the Plaza Luisita complex in Tarlac City.

Lt. Gen. Romeo Dominguez, Nolcom chief, reported the military tapped the PNP to ensure that no disruption will be undertaken by the rebels, who he said, tend to embarrass not just the project organizers but the government in its attempt to promote Central and Northern as major travel destinations in the country.

"Aside from the troops inside Camp Aquino in Tarlac City, the 703rd Infantry Brigade under Colonel Pedro Curva, was tapped to provide security in the area," Dominguez said.

The assurance came in the heels of a noted renewed offensives being conducted by communist rebels north of Manila in a bid to disrupt socio-economic activities, the military said.

Ahead of the conduct of the tourism showcase, military troops encountered a group of rebels while conducting combat patrol in Bulacan, an hour-drive from Tarlac.

Lt. Col. Preme Monta, Nolcom information officer, reported the rebels sustained several casualties based on the personal account of residents who witnessed the running gun battle and from blood stains splattered along the route of withdrawal.

Not a single soldier was wounded in the clash that lasted for about 20 minutes. Soldiers recovered from the scene of encounter several high-powered firearms, hundreds of live ammunitions, two mobile phones without SIM cards, and voluminous subversive documents. HFP
